Scam? Free iPad with new internet package. Rep asked for SSN

I called in to inquire about my internet package price increase. While seeming to ignore what I was asking, the rep assured he would give me the best rate possible and get my package back to my original price point I had setup prior. After agreeing, he mentioned it came with a free iPad. Essentially it seems the new $40 discount was offeset by the monthly service fee for the ipad so I would pay the higher amount and get an ipad. The rep was pushy and asked for SSN and DOB along with credit card info to pay for taxes on the ipad. The whole process felt scammy and I am unsure if my information is now compromised. I need assistance and cannot direct message.

@XfinityAdrienne I am assuming the SSN is for a credit check? If so, is it a soft or hard inquiry?

[Edited: "Solicitation"]. It is not free. A mobile account will be created and it will take all the money it needs from you to pay for the iPad. Internet discount would be there regardless of the iPad.  [Edited: "Solicitation"]. Read on the internet about this scam.

Same just happened to me. It was a very sketchy link without any info about what you were entering your birthday and ssn for.

Seems like some support is running their scam within the Xfinity support system.

why does any oauth need to happen to get a free ipad on an account that is already being paid on, for many years for most customers. That information is never provided in the first place so what are you oauthing against?!

The same thing happened to me in September 2024. I was apprehensive about the ipad. I told the rep we really didn't need one but they kept pushing and saying it was free. I finally agreed thinking I was renewing the promotion for internet service and getting a FREE iPad. The iPad arrived, I gave it to my son. We never activated it. My son is young and only using it on our home wi-fi network. A month or so later, I got a bill from Xifinity for a data line for the iPad and a monthly payment for the device!!!!! I have been calling and calling and keep getting transferred to other departments. The last representative I spoke with back in early December was able to remove the data plan and reimburse me. He said he would submit issue to the fraud department and told me they never offered a free iPad with any internet service promotion and that the person who sold it to me shouldn't have done that. The fraud department was supposed to follow up with me via email, I waited through the holidays and haven't heard anything. I cannot get through to a real, live person, Xfinity wants to automate everything. I am still getting billed for the monthly installments to pay off the FREE iPad I was pressured into taking.
