Channel Listing Difference

I have Xfinity in the 19607 area. There are two channels listed for the"same" channels and I want someone to tell me what the difference is in the channels and if they are the same thing, why is it necessary to have two different listings? Makes no sense at this point. I will give you an example: Channel 803 and Channel 1003 are both listed as KYWDT. Please explain the difference.

Thanks for meeting us here in our community, @user_451dcb, about your channel concerns. We're happy to help.

I understand why that would be confusing. In most cases, channels like 803 and 1003 are the same station, with the difference being the broadcast format. Channel 803 is typically the standard listing, while channel 1003 is the HD (High Definition) version of the same channel. That's why both are listed as KYWDT.

Some customers prefer having separate channel numbers because it allows them to choose between SD and HD versions, while others find the duplicate listings unnecessary. If you're using newer X1 equipment, both channel numbers generally provide the same programming, with the higher-numbered channel often being the HD feed.

So then if I want my DVR to record HD, I somehow have to use the higher channels, correct, rather than voice control to record a show irrespective of a specific channel?  Seems like that just makes it more difficult to control. Is there a way to ensure it only records the HD channel if there are two channels with the same content? And what is considered newer X1 equipment - I haven't had my DVR or router replaced for years?

Also, where can I get a list of these duplicate channels?

@user_451dcb When setting the recording, you would have to select the correct HD channel.

To set up your X1 to prioritize HD channels, follow these steps:

Press the “Xfinity” button on your remote and select the “Settings” gear icon.

  1. Navigate to “Preferences” and select it.
  2. Choose “General” and then highlight “Default Guide View”.
  3. Select “HD Channels” from the options available and press “OK”.
  4. To check your selection, press the “Guide” button on your remote.

This will set your default guide view to prioritize HD channels.

Also, you're able to view your channel lineup here: https://www.xfinity.com/support/local-channel-lineup after you sign into your account with your Xfinity ID.

Your last answer disproves your first where you told me the lower channels were standard definition and the upper channels are HD. When I switched to HD Channels as per above, those lower channels are still listed, so switching served no purpose. So now I am back to the original question, why are there two channels with the same HD programming and channel ID?

Also I didn't ask for a channel lineup, I asked for a list of the duplicate channels.

Good morning @user_451dcb To clarify, if a channel appears more than once in your lineup, it is typically because one version is HD and the other is SD, or because counterpart channels are intentionally included to group channels by genre and make browsing the guide easier. These counterpart channels are working as designed, and we appreciate your feedback regarding their placement.

You can also use the Guide and DVR filters to personalize and prioritize your viewing experience.

We are aware of an issue where adding a channel to your Favorites may automatically add its counterpart channel as well when that same network appears elsewhere in the lineup. Our teams are actively working to resolve this as quickly as possible; however, there is no fix available at this time. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our customers as we work toward a resolution.

... Channel 803 and Channel 1003 are both listed as KYWDT. Please explain the difference.

There isn't any. Almost a decade ago Comcast/Xfinity announced a grouping plan called "Channel Neighborhoods", an attempt to standardize channel lineups nationwide (see https://web.archive.org/web/20171223064827/https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/new-channel-lineup). The plan, oddly, copied most channels numbered below 1000 into a group above 999. Local HD channels would be numbered 10xx, where xx is the channel's over-the-air channel number. That left us with oddities like having two channel numbers for the same feed, and that's what you are seeing with KYWDT. "803" is the number that had been assigned before "Channel Neighborhoods" were implemented, and "1003" was the number added afterword.

Funny, we don't seem to hear anything about Channel Neighborhoods these days . . .

How funny is it that I get an email to click on the accepted solution when there is no solution!
