Denied service due to past tenant debt

I picked up my modem Friday and installed it that very day. It worked perfectly all weekend until Monday night, it went out.

It takes 10 calls to different numbers to even get a real person on the phone, all of which are only "technical support" and cannot help with the issue. You are then given the number to a collections department who tells you that until the past tenants debt is settled, you are not able to get service. They tell you that you can go into a retail store with your ID and lease agreement, but if the past tenant did not cancel their service before you moved in, you are accused of knowing them.

I canceled my service. Not worth it in the slightest.

Thank you for sharing this feedback @user_ivk7ie, and I can understand the frustrating experience you had trying to get through to the right team. Dealing with a previous tenant's account block is an incredibly stressful situation, especially when you are just trying to set up your new home.
While I can't guarantee a specific outcome, I would like to look into it and see if we can resolve this block for your address. To help me investigate, could you provide a few more details?
Is the name on your lease completely different from the name of the previous tenant?
Were you able to show your lease agreement to anyone yet, or did you cancel before doing so?

No, I did not show my lease to someone. Part of issue is that the previous tenant has the same last name as I do, but it's a very common surname for the area in which I'm located.

I canceled instead due to the customer service reps I encountered. They were rude and unprofessional, and made the situation worse.
