Is " [Edited]" a legitimate email address from Xfinity/Comcast?

An elderly friend of mine received an email regarding updating their Gateway and it came from " [Edited: "Personal Information"]". The email was forwarded to me and an image is missing from it. I just need to know if it's legitimate or not so I can help them upgrade their equipment, if necessary, or tell them to disregard the email and not to click on anything.

The email address is xfinity @ emails  .  xfinity  .  com (I added spaces since it edited it out of my original post).

user_zn38oc We would need to view the account in question to know if it did come from us for sure, but that does look like our emails sent out to customers for updates. No need to click any links though if they are worried about doing so, they can upgrade by calling in, going to a store, or reaching out to us here. Any method is good for upgrading equipment.

An elderly friend of mine received an email regarding updating their Gateway ...

The email "From:" address cannot be trusted because it's very easy for scammers to fake.

The best way for customers to check if an email is valid is in Xfinity Connect webmail (https://connect.xfinity.com/) where the XFINITY Verified Email logo should be visible next to any message that claims to be from Comcast/Xfinity. Note that anyone can insert an XFINITY Verified image in the body of an email, so it's important to note not only the presence of the Verified image, but that it is in the correct locations:

  • preceding the email subject line in the list of emails
  • above the subject line when the email is opened.

See https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/comcast-verified-email for examples of valid logo placement. A logo in the body of the email does not count.

If the logo is missing when you view the message in webmail, the message is not from Comcast. Unfortunately, AFAIK the logo is not present when you view one of their messages in an email app or program. It's only visible when you use their web email site, and may not be present when an email is forwarded.

Samples of recent scammer phishing messages can be found at https://internetsecurity.xfinity.com/help/alerts under "Top Phishing Scams".
