WiFi change wireless security camera

A lot of the security cameras say it won’t work with 5 GHz only 2.4. What am I supposed to do because it looks like my modem is set on 5 GHz?

Hello, @user_3d3c6b

Thanks for choosing to work with us here online so we can help address your concerns as a community. We want to be available to help support you whenever you need it. Security cameras offer a lot of peace of mind and it is very important that you have that visibility around your home for safety. Initially, I am thinking that there may be some settings we can help you change to allow your wireless connection to connect with the 2.4 GHTZ.

With our modems, we have band steering and it automatically connects to either 2.4 GHTZ or 5.0 GHTZ to optimize your in-home network. That setting can be turned off or if you have your own modem, it may be that you need to change those settings to allow it to connect. Do you have one of our Xfintiy modems or your own modem/router?

@ComcastDevin sorry for my delay, I did not expect a response. LOL.. It is my own  modem but COmcast Approved Motorola. I dont want to change the modem to 2.4 because I was told by a Comcast rep that the 2.4 band provides coverage at a longer range but transmits data at slower speeds. I use my wifi for the following. Laptop email, streaming using Comcast Flex, and hopefully the new security camera.

No need to apologize @user_3d3c6b , we all know life comes first above everything else. We actually have employees staffed 24/7 for customer concerns in the Xfinity Support forums, working alongside customers and our awesome experts, who you'll see pop into threads from time to time to help out. It keeps our community going. =]

So that is correct, 2.4Ghz is going to have more range, and is the most commonly used radio frequency you'll see these days, even baby monitors and microwaves transmit on it, meaning the vast majority of consumer grade devices are going to prefer a 2.4Ghz over 5Ghz. With your modem and router set-up, I'd recommend checking out the manufacturer manual and seeing if you can simultaneously broadcast 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz signals from the router portion. You may see hiccups in connection at times depending on your set-up, but that will be your best shot. If the modem doesn't have that option, you may want to look into a new device.

I do know with some Motorola modems you can only broadcast one band at a time, I used to have an SBG6580 that was set-up this way, and I wound up returning it for a device that would let me broadcast both signals at once. In the end, I wound up going with a leased device because I was personally tired of upgrading my equipment and shelling out a couple hundred dollars every few years on upgrades, but I know a lot of folks prefer the flexibility and networking options that comes with using a third-party device.

Fantastic! Thank you for letting me go over this information with you today. I appreciate your time and being part of the Comcast team. It is important to me that you know of all the great benefits included in your Xfinity services which is why I want to share my personal favorite the Xfinity My Account app. This app allows you to view your statements, make payments, view interruption information, and troubleshoot when needed (steps are listed under each line of business tab). I love this app and I think you will too. Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

I no longer work for Comcast.
