Cannot load email as imap

My husband changed his password on the computer so I changed it on his iPhone and kept getting an error message that the email could not be found — I honestly forget the message at this point. Anyway, I deleted his email from his phone and added it again but it defaults to POP instead of imap. I even tried the good ole use a fake email account and then put in the correct data and that let me add the account but he could not send from it. Since there is no Xfinity email app he goes to Safari to send email which is a pain. Any help would be appreciated!
