filters not working

I have email filters set up to reject emails that have a sender that does not exist - I am still getting email every day with those spam emails.  Why is this not working?

Are these emails going to the Spam folder or the Inbox?

They are going to the inbox.

The sender is probably being "spoofed".  It is pretty easy for spammers to make it look like an address that its really not coming from.  Start marking them as spam when they get to the Inbox.  It may take a while and a lot of markings to kick in.

I assumed they were being spoofed - that's why I filter on 'sender does not exist' - when I view source - sender is '<>' ... which I thought meant does not exist

I can't find documentation on this, but I'm wondering if maybe the "does not exist" condition is satisfied if the header is missing, rather than empty?
