"Unsupported message type" voicemail with Xfinity NOW Wireless

Hello,

I have Xfinity Wireless NOW and am having an issue. I keep getting "Unsupported message type" voicemails from one phone number. I have tried to block the number but they are still able to leave a voicemail which they never leave anything. I would like to stop them from even reaching my voicemail. I have my voicemail box set up correctly as others have left messages.

Hello, TripleGGG1959! Thank you for reaching out! Have you tried blocking the number on your mobile device?

I have blocked the  number to no avail. The calls go directly to voicemail. I have tried turning off the voicemail feature I found on another thread. These people never leave a number.  I called them from a google voice line and they are some type of health scammer. They never leave a message.

Thanks

Ugh, that sounds so frustrating—especially when you're doing everything right on your end to block the number, and they’re still slipping through to voicemail. I totally get how unsettling that can feel, especially when it’s coming from a scammer who never even leaves a legit message.

With Xfinity Mobile NOW, here’s the scoop: Even if a number is blocked, some calls may still be able to go straight to voicemail depending on how the carrier handles call blocking. That’s unfortunately a limitation across most wireless carriers right now—not just us.

The “Unsupported message type” notification usually means the scammer is trying to send some kind of malformed or non-standard message (like a multimedia file or a bot-generated audio) that our voicemail system doesn’t recognize. It’s not an error on your end, and it doesn’t affect your voicemail box, but yes—it’s super annoying.

Here’s what you can do to reduce or hopefully stop those calls from hitting your voicemail:

  1. Make sure the number is blocked through your phone settings AND the Xfinity Mobile Spam Blocker tools. In your Xfinity Mobile app or account online, check under "Caller Protection" and enable Spam Block and Scam Block, if available.

  2. Use your phone’s built-in “Silence Unknown Callers” or “Do Not Disturb” features. On iPhones, for example, you can silence calls from anyone not in your contacts. This won’t stop voicemail completely, but it helps limit interaction.

  3. If the number keeps getting around the block, you can also download a third-party call filtering app like Hiya or Robokiller—many customers use those alongside Xfinity Mobile for extra blocking power.

And just to be safe, keep reporting the number through the Xfinity Mobile app—each report helps us update our system and improve scam filtering across the network.

We’re really sorry you’ve had to deal with this—we know how draining it is to feel like you’re being harassed, especially by scammers. Let us know if you’d like help checking your account settings to make sure everything’s fully locked down.
