SD channels now in windowbox format

As of last week, any SD channel I try to watch is now shown in a windowbox format with black bars all around the picture. Kind of like having a postage stamp for an image. Until last week the SD channels were zoomed to fill vertically, which kept the correct aspect ratio, but filled the screen better. The zoom function in the X-1 box only stretches it horizontally, so the image aspect ratio is stretched, not correct. This is also now the way SD channels show up when using the Xfinity Stream app on my Roku TV or my laptop. Can somebody at Xfinity fix this and return it to the previous formatting?

Thanks.

Is anyone else seeing this? Went back to all black bars today. Somebody is messing with something.

Hello, user_xldu7p. Thank you for your feedback and for joining the forum community. I know I'd be reaching out about that too! Have you had a chance to adjust your video display using the X1 On-Screen Guide to see if it helps?

We tried everything possible on this end. Countless power up-downs, reboots of the router and the X1 box, unhook-rehook, zoom, not zoom, Several resolution changes. Had a tech out here that did all the same himself and agreed it is a back end issue, either at Xfinity or the SD provider to Xfinity. This is certainly an issue on your end as it affects the Xfinity stream app too. You need to reach out to your in-house tech people and have them go back to vertically zooming the SD content. Also yesterday, all day instead of just black borders, the left and right were bright blue as the image I posted shows. Today back to black borders. Please get this resolved as it also isn't great for the longevity of the TVs.

@XfinityThomasA   This is a Comcast issue not a user issue! We all have been through everything possible on our end with no help!

Am I the ONLY person in the North Georgia area to see this behavior on the SD channels? People please respond if you are also seeing this.

Thanks!

Yeah seeing this in New Jersey as well. I watch H&I a lot and this is highly frustrating. There is no aspect ratio override setting in the xfinity stream app.

@user_1b8f41 I've been fighting with support about this for almost a solid week, rebooting, powering down and up, unplugging and plugging back in, checking cables, rebooting routers, removing AVR from system. The techs refuse to admit a backend issue on this, Went back over two years on the forum and found the same issue back then, and no fix other than suddenly things went back. Got a DM today that there is a system wide update on the 12th, in the early hours so maybe that will take care of it. Fingers crossed.

@user_1b8f41 I can appreciate how frustrating it is to not have a full-screen image when trying to watch your favorite programs. Have you double-checked that your firmware for your device is fully up-to-date and try uninstalling and re-installing the Stream app to make sure that you have the latest version?

Same issue here in Indianapolis, IN. They did some kind of update on 01/28/2025 that caused this issue. Seems to only happen on Sub channels like MeTV through wireless box and phone only. DVR is still ok. No fix after hours of painstaking communications and a tech visit.

Does it affect the sub channels when you use the Xfinity Stream app too?

Xfinity wants me to mark one of the replies as a solution,  but the issue has not been resolved.   Anybody have a working fix for this?

I would hate to say it, but it may just be this way from now on. I don’t think Comcast really cares about SD channels. I don’t even understand why they offer SD versions of the HD channels anymore, since almost everyone has an HDTV now. And even if you don’t, modern cable boxes are capable of converting them. Maybe some people still have SD-only boxes, I don’t know. But who is there to address this to? I actually remember when I was on Verizon FiOS, they did something very similar, and it’s been that way ever since. They don’t care.

I'd love to not have to watch SD either but there are many SD channels that don't have HD equivalents. Like MeTv, H&I, etc. When Xfinity chooses to send properly formatted HD versions of ALL SD channels, this won't be as big an issue. Also had Verizon for years and their boxes had an SD passthrough if you knew how to access it. At least Xfinity could fix the zoom feature to expand BOTH horizontal and vertical aspect not just horizontal. There is NO practical reason for this change.

Same issue in Maryland. Spoke with Xfinity, tried all the reboots with no success!! Xfinity....please address this issue! For $290/month, we deserve viewing in same format as 1 month ago (1.25.25). Please help!! Issue with TCM and MeTV, most obvious.

Happening using the Xfinity app on a brand new insignia 32 Smart fire TV, ME Tv had black bars as LL the way around it and a white line across the top bar .doing the same thing in other room using the cable box. If I use an antennae it is fine , this is a Xfinity issue.
