Need capability to control elderly parents TV

Good morning,

bamd94 submitted the below question, and I also need the capability to assist my mom because I live in another city.    Did Xfinity provide a solution?

Need an app to control elderly parents TV

My 90 yr old mother (who lives in assisted living facility) cannot use the remote to get the programs she wants to watch.  It's too complicated for her.  I can't even get her to correctly use the voice activation feature.  I tried downloading the xfinity remote control app, but it won't work even though her account is linked to my xfinity account.  She loves to watch tv, but it's useless unless I can change the channel for her.  Any ideas?  Does product development read these posts?  I would think this would help every person with an elderly parent----we're talking MILLIONS of people!

I have the same problem. It would be a big help for xfinity to add a remote control feature to their app, linked to my phone via wifi so I can change her channels and volume from a different location.

We do have an Xfinity Remote App for your mobile device, which will allow you to change channels using the app. That said, volume is controlled through the TV, generally using infrared, which requires a line of sight to the device itself so the app wouldn't be much assistance there, unfortunately. With so many different manufacturers as well, each with their own different type of coding and technology, it would be difficult to create a remote control app for TV's to change the volume from a distance.

That said, it's actually a genius idea, and I can send the information to our product engineers--maybe they can come up with something, especially to assist customers who have accessibility needs. I'll link some details about the Xfinity TV Remote App below as well--give us a shout if you have any follow-ups.

Get Xfinity TV Remote App

Xfinity TV Remote App Eligible TV Boxes:

With the Xfinity TV Remote app, you can use your smartphone or tablet as a remote control: change the channel, program your DVR or search Xfinity On Demand and TV listings - all with a simple tap on the screen. You can even schedule DVR recordings when you're away from home. Your TV is now right in your hands.

Eligible TV Boxes

The remote features of the Xfinity TV Remote app will work with most Comcast TV Boxes, including Xfinity X1 TV Boxes.

When you download and log into the Xfinity TV Remote app on your smartphone or tablet, you’ll see a list of the eligible TV Boxes in your home. Simply select the TV Box you want to control and use your smartphone or tablet to change the channel, set a DVR recording and more.

The following TV Boxes do not support the remote features of the Xfinity TV Remote app:

  • Comcast DVR with TiVo service
  • TV Adapters
  • Motorola DCT 1000
  • Motorola DCT 1200
  • Motorola DCT 1700
  • Motorola DCT 3200
  • Pace 510
  • Pace 511
  • Pace 550
  • Pace 551
  • Panasonic TV Boxes
  • SA8000 and 8000HD
  • SA 8300C
  • SA 2000
  • SA 2010
  • SA 3100HD
  • Samsung TV Boxes

Note: If you have an incompatible box, you can download the application to view TV Listings and Xfinity On Demand, but you won't be able to control your TV from the app.
