Private IP address

Apple created a problem by adding the private IP address to their phones. Now I cannot limit their WiFi activities and the bedtime mode is useless. How do I get around this. Either their MAC address is changed or the IP is changed. The Xfinity router still sees their device but does not block the connection. How do prevent this from happening?

In case this is what you're referring to by "Xfinity Router sees but not blocks" what happens when a particular device in this case mobile phone, is "paused" from the xFi gateway page?

As a default, if the wifi router is unplugged do the phones lose internet connectivity? If not, the mobile device may still be connected/receiving service from the wireless carrier mobile network...

Thanks and good luck.

The phones do have have cell service but I’ve blocked the phones from using some apps via cell service. The xfi app showed paused, but continues to count the time connected. This only happens on the iPhones. The other branded devices pause and loose WiFi. I know it’s apple’s security causing the problem.

Hey there @Phillm80!

The recent Apple update has a new privacy feature called iCloud Private Relay, which works a bit like a Virtual Private Network and may impact the way xFi works with those devices. You can find more information here and here. The last link also has information about how to turn the feature off, if you want or need to.

I understand how important xFi is, especially with young kids, and I hope that those articles help!

@XfinityGina In addition to this issue, how do I enable Mac filtering on the xb7 modem. It doesn’t show up when I login and click WiFi. There’s a bar that reads Mac filtering, but no enable options. Thanks.

@Phillm80 I see our awesome Expert jweaver0312 provided really useful tips for Mac filtering in this thread. Here is the link to assist you with your question to Mac filtering Can I user MAC address filtering on my Xfinity home router?

Well, I checked their devices and that relay function is disabled because they don’t have ICloud+, according to what one of their phones said. It reads Beta. The only way to enable that is pay for a ICloud+ Subscription. What are your thoughts on the Private Address setting on the Wi-Fi connection?  They are enabled.

Hello there,

The theory sounds plausible, however if Im understanding things correctly, WIFI is off thus the device should not connect regardless of the IP address and also the IP address may be dynamic anyway.

Wild guess here, but do the phones connect to internet and or display signs of upload, download activity when Airplane mode is on? Airplane mode should disable wireless transmitter and with WIFI off its beyond reality if the phone still gets to the internet, chat or what have you.

Also have we checked the "available networks" in the vicinity? The device may be connecting to WIFI signal in the local area perhaps?

 Just my .2 cents.

Thanks and good luck.

@user_bb801b The Wi-Fi is not off, but paused. One of the phones has almost all the apps disabled for cellular but shows it is still accessing wifi data on my network name.  It continues to count time.  I disabled one of the Phones private IP settings. Ill try that and see what happens.
