Can't record a show while watching it on the app?

I've tried the streaming app on and off over several years and I see it has improved some but I still see some missing functionality.  For example, I don't see a way to actually record a show while you are watching it.  I don't even see a way to record a show from the mini guide.  The only way I see a way to record a show is to back out to the main full screen guide which stops the show you are currently watching.  Then you can select to record a show directly from the main full page guide.

Is this right?  Do you actually have to exit out of a show you want to record in order to record it?  Seems pretty counterintuitive

Hello @Biggen12. Thanks for reaching our team on Forums. Here's a helpful link that will give you instructions on how to set recordings:

Set Up a DVR Recording with the Xfinity Stream App

As a customer with X1 or another Xfinity TV package with cloud-based DVR service, you can schedule DVR recordings from the Xfinity Stream app on your Apple or Android device.

Schedule a Recording

Note: The Record option only displays if you're a customer with X1 or other Xfinity TV package with cloud-based DVR service.

  1. Open the Xfinity Stream app while connected to any WiFi network or mobile network.
  2. Swipe left to right to open the main navigation, or hit the menu button (three stacked horizontal lines) on the top-left.
  3. Tap All Channels with the Live TV header to open the TV listings grid.
  4. Scroll through the listings to find a program to record. Tap on the program you want and you'll see the program details.
  5. Tap Record to schedule the recording.
  6. For TV series, tapping Record will bring up additional recording options. From here you can choose to record Just This Episode or Set Series Recording.
    • To record a single episode, choose Just This Episode.
    • To record the entire series, choose Set Series Recording. The Series Recording options display. Tap Confirm after adjusting the options. These recording options are specific to that particular TV series recording.
  7. To record a movie, tap Record to schedule the recording. (Movie recordings have no recording options screens.)
  8. You'll see a confirmation saying Recording Set (for Apple) or Recording Scheduled (for Android).

@XfinityGabby What you posted is just a copy/paste from the FAQ.

I know how to record.  My complaint/issue was there is no way to record whilst watching a show.  You have to back all the way out to the guide to actually record a show.  So if you are watching something and you want to record it, you have to exit to the guide which essentially stops the show you are watching just to have the option to record.  This is dumb.  There is no reason that the record option should be missing while watching a show.

I know that Comcast would rather rent their customers boxes for $10/month and this is why the app is handicapped as much as it is.  But its 2023 guys.  We are missing simple stuff in this app like recording a show directly while watching (as I mentioned above) and not having thumbnail previews while fast forwarding through a recording.

Everyone can tell that Xfinity isn't really serious about their customers transitioning to this app in lieu of cables boxes because of the limitation imposed by using it.

I certainly understand there. At the moment you are only able to schedule recordings on the app. The reason is that to be able to watch and record at the same time requires Tuners, which are in the cable boxes. This is a great point and concern you bring up.

Feel free to submit your feedback here as most of our improvements come from concerns like yours.

@XfinityDevinC

Tuners!?  I’m pretty sure you can easily record a show on YouTubeTV and Hulu while watching it live without having to exit out of the show you currently watching like you have to do with the Xfinity app.

It’s not a physical device limitation that is the issue. Comcast simply doesn’t want people to use this app en masse so it’s deliberately handicapped and crippled to provide just bare bones functionality.  The rental box income is too sweet to have everyone switch to this app and lose it.

@Biggen12  I understand the disappointment there, but I can assure you that is not the case. At the moment, that is how our system works with the DVR services. I have provided the link to provide your feedback, as a lot of our improvements to apps and systems have come from feedback like yours.

I no longer work for Comcast.
