Stream 5.1 Audio

I'm giving Xfinity Stream a try and I am only getting a stereo (PCM 2.0) output from content on the app on both a Fire Cube 3 and Roku Ultra.  That's true with any program I try.  The devices do 5.1 and Atmos just fine with other apps like Netflix.  I don't see any settings on the Xfinity apps for audio output.

Does Stream actually do surround sound?   If so, is it limited to particular platforms and which would those be?

Thanks

Hi @BIslander, Thank you for visiting our official Xfinity Forums Community support page. Please refrain from making duplicate public post regarding the same requested information. As per your other post, there are no further updates to share. Dolby Atmos may not be available on all channels and all streams. We recommend checking which features are available for each channel by visiting the guide information for each show/event/movie to provide what content and quality is available. For the best viewing experience, we highly recommend using our X1 platform services and equipment.

Thanks.  I understand the rules and did not intend to violate them.  My other post was about Atmos and you said that format is not supported on Stream.  I mentioned only getting stereo in that post as well, but the replies did not address that as far as i could tell.  So, I thought I'd ask about that separately.

Perhaps I misunderstood, though.  Was the reply on Atmos saying Stream does not do 5.1 either, that stereo is it?

BIslander  I’m glad you’re giving Xfinity Stream a try, and I’m sorry to hear you’re experiencing issues with audio output.

Xfinity Stream does support surround sound, but the availability can vary based on the content and the device you’re using. Here’s what you should know:

  1. Content Support: Not all content on Xfinity Stream is available in surround sound. Surround sound support is often dependent on the specific program or movie you’re watching.

  2. Device Compatibility: Surround sound support can also vary depending on the device. While Xfinity Stream is designed to work with various devices, certain devices might handle audio differently.

  3. App Settings: Currently, Xfinity Stream doesn’t offer extensive audio settings within the app itself. The app typically relies on the device's audio settings.

  4. Device-Specific Issues: Since you’re experiencing stereo output on both the Fire Cube 3 and Roku Ultra, it might be worth checking if there are any firmware updates for these devices or if there are specific settings related to audio output that need to be adjusted.

If you’re still having issues, I’d be happy to assist further. Please let me know if you have any more details or if there’s anything specific you’d like to troubleshoot.

@XfinityChristy

Thank you for the reply.

On 1.  I have tried lots of content, including movies on HBO and primetime network TV shows, and they all only output 2.0.  The same content does surround on my X1 DVR.

2.  Both of my devices do surround sound just fine with all other apps like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video.  So, they are fully capable of 5.1.

3.  I've tried all the device audio output settings and stereo is the best I get.

4.  Both devices are fully up to date and I have removed and re-installed the Stream app on both.

Do you have any information about which device platforms are known to support 5.1 on Stream?

Thanks again.

I am happy to help, this topic is a bit more advanced than what I taught during training, but I asked my husband, and he told me to Google it. (lol)Here is a breakdown of what I found.  Xfinity Stream’s support for 5.1 surround sound can vary based on the device platform and the content being streamed. Generally, the following device platforms are known to support 5.1 surround sound on Xfinity Stream:

  1. Xfinity X1 Box: This is typically the most reliable platform for accessing surround sound through Xfinity Stream.
  2. Xfinity Flex Box: It also supports 5.1 surround sound when available.
  3. Certain Smart TVs: Some models from brands like Samsung, LG, and Vizio may support 5.1 surround sound if configured correctly.
  4. Apple TV (4th Generation and newer): Surround sound support is available on newer Apple TV models.
  5. Amazon Fire TV (4K and newer models): Some Fire TV devices support 5.1 surround sound, depending on the app and content.
  6. Roku Devices: Select Roku models may support 5.1 surround sound.

If you have any more questions or need further help, please let me know!

@XfinityChristy

My Amazon Fire Cube is the most advanced model they have and the Roku Ultra is also right up there, with both supporting surround sound from other apps.

Your reply mentions Xfinity Stream on X1.  I thought Stream is for non X1 devices and my XG1v4 box doesn't have the app.  Is there a way to get it on X1?  When I search for Stream on my DVR, it has info about links to get it on other devices.

Thanks again for your help with this.

To all following this, the forum support group has opened a ticket on the lack of 5.1 to the advanced group and said we should get an update by mid-week.

Got an update from the ticket they opened.  The Fire Cube and Roku Stream apps do not support 5.1 audio.  I asked if there was a list of devices that do.  No such list.

@BIslander its because none of them do, the devices themselves support it, the Xfinity stream app doesn't is the issue. All of there IP based channels seem to be 2.0 stereo. Crazy in 2024, almost 2025 this is a thing, considering every HD channel has support 5.1 dolby sound for over 15 years. Nearly every HD channel has 5.1 content, its the only reason iim holding on to my cablecards with hdhomerun still. I would drop those if the Xfinity stream app just supported 5.1 surround sound.
