2.4 printer will not connect to XB8

1) printer worked fine on ATT until I moved to Xfinity

2) I split the bands,

3) SSID's are different for 2.4 and 6ghz band

4) Passwords are different for each SSID

5) I cleared old network setting from HP5100 - it's a 2.4 radio only

6) ioT's lose connection  a) thermostat first  b) door lock

7) I turned of the advanced security, made no difference, turned it back on

8) XB8 sticker with SSID/Password is not correct for this refurbished modem/router

9) Speed nowhere approaches the 1000gb, but I understand on wifi

10)  Xfinity tech support told me to buy a new printer

I am a retired network/security operator.  What is up with Xfinity, you have made it useless for anyone knowing anything about modem/routers

IF I buy my own modem/router combo, will it work with Xfinity if I give you the MAC address.  DOCSIS 3.1 is correct for Xfinity, right?  I just want to setup my peripherals and use the internet.  If you need support help, I will be glad to work for you guys at my home.  Support was dismal, apparently I never reached higher up support than the person who told me to just buy a new printer, and I just bit my tongue.  I gave them all the information here.

This sounds suspiciously similar to a problem I have with an older WiFi adapter one of my PCs connecting but not getting an IP address assigned.   My thought is that the Channel Mode on the 2.4 GHz network needs to be set to b/g/n but alas, we no longer have access to that control on the Xb8.  For better or worse, Xfinity is now managing that setting 'automatically'.

If your printer has an ethernet port, you might try a wireless bridge or you could add on an Wireless Access Point you configure yourself. It should be cheaper than a new printer or buying your own modem & router.

Or you could just buy another wireless router that supports your printer's WiFi interface (and where you can adjust the settings).  You can turn off the WiFi and DHCP functions on the XB8 and just use it as a modem/firewall.

If you go the own my modem path (which my daughter did) I don't recall having to give them the MAC address during setup which was fairly simple.   It's not just the DOCSIS standard that matters, you'll want to pick a modem that matches your plan's speed.   I believe you can get a list of compatible modems for your plan on the Xfinity support page.

Again my suspicion is that you'll need to tweak the 2.4GHz network on whatever router or access point you buy or you'll end up back where you are today.

If I still have to tweak a simple 2.4 setup, then Xfinity has not taken it grimy hands off my connection.  Just not happy with Xfinity. right now.

FWIW, if an XB8 is placed into bridge mode, the firewall component is disabled.

I am aware that I can bridge this and add my own router, however after changing a few settings, I have been able to connect a few items on 2.4.  The security that xfinity uses is too restrictive for some devices.

@user_n95276 have you been able to get the printer to work by changing the settings?

No, I have all but given up hope on making 2.4 devices function on xfinity.  I have the XB8-T modem/router.  I found an older Verizon phone that works only on 2.4 for wifi calling.  The only way I can get it to see the xfinity 2.4 connection is to turn on airplane mode, and kill the cell radio.  It connects fine.  There is something in your service, I think it is the combined 2.4/5/6 ghz signal that just doesn't connect to 2.4 devices only.  I have split the SSID's with different names, and even passwords, yet none of my hp devices, especially my hp5100 combo printer.  It states clearly that it will only connect to 2.4ghz.  I can see the printer using HP printer connect software, but it fails to connect.  It was working perfectly on  ATT fiber.  I think some devices don't like the protocol of your combined signals.  I have turned off the advanced security, I purged all previous network connections on the printer, and it still won't connect.  I am hesitant to buy a printer because many of them that connect in the network mode still use 2.4ghz because of the robust signal and longer range.  I have several ioT devices that I connected, and all have dropped off the network.  I purchased a Nighhawk router and am thinking about bridging your equipment, and just using the internet signal and controlling my own devices.  I am very disappointed in Xfinity.  For most people I am certain it does quite well, but I have a lot of devices that still work only on 2.4.  The mode/router I picked up was a refurb.  Even the login, password on your device is not what is needed to get access.  I have the phone app installed, but still don't see a bridging option.  I really wish there was another ISP in the area.  I have talked with many other IT guys like myself, and they all so just buy my own docsis 3.1 modem and router.  I am beginning to think that might be a route.  I need to print some tax documents, and I have always used a static IP for my network printer, never encountered a stalemate til now.  I welcome any advice.
