6ghz - won't turn off permanently - causing connection issues with many devices

Hi,

Is there a way to permanently disabled 6ghz?

I have several devices (PC laptop and iMac) that automatically choose 6ghz - but have really poor connection which causes major problems when working.

If I disable 6ghz in the admin portal - then forget the network and rejoin the wifi on these devices - everything is fine and full strong connection. I also have 2 pods in the house.

This is a major issue as my wife really struggles with technology and when she is working can't afford for the router to turn 6ghz back on!....why is it doing this if I have disabled it?

Any help would be appreciated?

I tried to change the SSID name to separate 6ghz from 2.4 and 5ghz however you can't as it is greyed out

So frustrating

user_keicjl Thank you so much for reaching out for help with your Wi-Fi 6 GHz signal. The 6 GHz is managed automatically by the Xb8 gateway. To remove the 6 GHz option, you could downgrade the modem to one of our older models that do not have the option. Our Xb7 and Xb6 may work depending on your speed for your needs, so you would not have to manage where the devices are connecting.

@XfinityAmandaB Hi, My router was upgraded by yourselves due to constant disconnection of the tv signal and internet and due to it being 3 years old. Why have an option to disable if it constantly turns on? Can you send me a NEW XB7 router please

@user_keicjl If you would like to swap out the equipment, you can visit a local service center to swap the equipment for free as shipping one to you may have a shipping fee. If you are needing any assistance in locating a service center you can follow this link: https://www.xfinity.com/support/service-center-locations/ to locate one near you! Would you visit a local store? If yes when so that we can follow up to confirm the swap went well.

I am having the same issue.  I have to go in periodically (weekly) and manually disable the 6ghz or it breaks the connection to many of our devices.  Seems a little ridiculous that the settings do not stay disabled.

@rcurnow Why not simply disable WiFi 6E on your devices, instead of fighting with the XB8?

It keeps enabling it again. I’ve turned it off on my phone three times today already.

@user_gbpqzp that’s insane. Which phone do you have? I know that on an iPhone, you go your WiFi settings, under that specific WiFi, and change WiFi mode from “Automatic” to “Off” to disable it. If that’s automatically enabling, I’d give Apple support an earful. Xfinity isn’t causing that one though, unfortunately.

user_gbpqzp To address connection issues caused by the 6GHz band not turning off permanently, you can temporarily disable it while setting up devices that only support the 2.4GHz band. Follow these steps:
  1. Log into the Admin Tool at http://10.0.0.1.
  2. Select **Connection**, then **Wi-Fi**.
  3. Click **EDIT** for the 5GHz and 6GHz bands.
  4. Select **Disable** and save settings.
  5. Complete the setup of your WiFi device using its app.
  6. Re-enable the 5GHz and 6GHz bands afterward to maintain optimal network performance.

This describes my exact situation.  Can you please release a software update that will allow us - the people who are paying you every month - to turn off the 6Ghz WiFi and have it stay off?  Should be easy.

You cannot split the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands, if you have a Pod.

If you have a Pod, you MUST set the Security Mode to WPA3-Personal-Transition, using the Xfinity app.

Actually, even if you don’t have a Pod, you really should have all three of the WiFi bands combined into a single SSID (do not split them) and you definitely should be using WPA3–Personal-Transition. There’s plenty of technical reasons to do both of these, as well.
