Ethernet port only 100mbps

Hello, we have had gig speed for years now over wifi with our router.

We have just tried to plug in a cable to one of the four ethernet ports and that device is only 100mpbs.

Can you unlock the ports to allow full speed?

Is it a Comcast rented  gateway device ? Does the device have an interface that supports gig connections ? Are you using a minimum of a cat5e ethernet cable ?

Yes, it is a rented gateway device.

Both the gateway and the device are rated for gig connections and the comcast gateway shows a blinking green light. There is another device plugged in that shows orange, which is expected as it is not a designed gig speed device.

It makes no difference on which port I plug either device into on the rented gateway, the lights follow the ethernet cable as I move them around the 4 ports.

All of our wifi devices (iphones, ipads, etc) get >500mbps all day everyday.

Yes, it is currently a new cat5e cable and I have tested it with a new cat 6 cable as well. Both cables are known good cables and both cables show a max of 100mbps when tested.

I have reset the device many times.

I have looked at 10.0.0.1 and the rented gateway shows a gig connection where it should be (whichever port has the gig speed device plugged into) and 100mbps to the "slower" device.

Hmmm. Perhaps it's malfunctioning. One more thing that you can try before getting it swapped out for another. Try hard resetting it to factory defaults by pressing and holding in the recessed reset button on the rear (or use the WPS button if it doesn't have a reset button hole) for 30 seconds.  You will lose any customized settings, and they will need to be re-configured from scratch. Good luck !

I appreciate the help.

How do I get to an actual Comcast employee to make the swap out?

I have spent hours on the Assistant bot that insists on repeatedly resetting the gateway and ensuring the cords are plugged in tight.

You don't mention what the slow connection device is but do you have access to the ethernet adapter settings for it?   I ran into a similar situation on an older HP All-in-One that was limited by it's internal wifi card (think it was "n" max) but the ethernet port was rated for 1GB.  It was sitting right next to the router but hadn't been connected via ethernet.   I connected via ethernet and turned off the wifi --- and the speed dropped to 100MBs - slower than the wifi.    I rechecked the specs and both router and computer could do 1GB.    I dug down through Windows menus until I got to the adapter settings and under "advanced" section the "speed and duplex" setting was set to 100MB/full duplex.   No idea how, when, why that would have been done.   I switched it to auto-negotiated and the link speed increased to the expected 1GB.   Something to check if you have access to the deeper adapter settings.
