ethernet ports

I have the newest router from Xfinity. I am trying to connect my desktop using the Ethernet plug, but nothing is working. The light is flashing green on the router. Does the Ethernet cord need to be laid out straight or can it still be rolled up? Because it is75 ft long, I have some of the Ethernet cord still rolled up while connected to my computer. I need a wired connection for a job, and I can not log into their system unless I am hard wired. Thanks for any help offered.
