Gaming Lag and Packet Loss Issues

What are the main reasons for packet loss when gaming with Ethernet connection?

@user_pb, Packet loss on a wired Ethernet connection can be especially frustrating as Ethernet is supposed to be the stable option for gaming. But even with a cable, several issues can still cause dropped packets:

1. Bad Cable or Port - Damaged Ethernet cables, loose connectors, bent pins, or failing router/PC ports can interrupt signal flow.

2. NIC (Network Card) Issues - Outdated drivers, overheating, or failing hardware can cause intermittent packet drops.
3. Router Problems - Old firmware, overloaded routing tables, or a struggling CPU in the router can drop packets even on wired connections.
4. Network Congestion - Too many devices on your network, peak‑hour ISP congestion, or overloaded game servers can all cause packet loss.
5. Server‑Side Issues - If the game’s servers are under heavy load or experiencing problems, you’ll see packet loss regardless of your setup.
6. Software Interference - Firewalls, VPNs, QoS misconfigurations, or background apps hogging bandwidth can disrupt packet flow.
7. Electrical or Environmental Interference - Long cable runs, poor shielding, or cables running alongside power lines can degrade signal quality.
8. ISP or External Routing Problems - If packet loss only appears when pinging outside your network, the issue may be with your ISP’s infrastructure or routing path.

I believe my issue is related to network congestion and isp external routing problems. How can I improve this?

@user_pb​  Did you ever get this resolved?  I've been having the same issue for almost a month now...two brand new modems later.  Was just in a game and got shot with 19% upload packet loss at the exact moment I made a manuever to evade that shot.  Guess what...I didn't make it. :)
