Hardwired Wireless Access Point

Hey y'all, in a new townhome and my gateway is in the garage. I got a Zyxel wireless access point hardwired (with a POE injector) on the third floor. It is broadcasting, but when I have it broadcast as the same SSID as the modem it's only connecting to the modem, not the WAP despite it having the stronger singal upstairs. I assume now that I need to learn a bit more about making this a sort of mesh network but just a little confused.

I'm reading that I need to set the Modem to bridge, but if I do that do I then lose the ability to connect to the modem's wifi? The garage is next to a rec room so obviously the signal is better there with the gateway.

I'm just struggling with information overload because I feel like only having one WAP is a bit different than several repeaters which seems like it may be what I keep getting linked to.

Thanks for meeting us here in our community about your home network concerns, @user_p8lncx. You've reached the right team for assistance. Can you tell me why the Gateway is in the garage? We find that the best place for the Gateway is in the center of the home. Here: https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/activate-xfi-gateway-app is a helpful article.

@XfinityLinda

Unfortunately that's where they installed my low-voltage and tech box.

@user_p8lncx if you want to create a home network without putting the Gateway into bridge mode we do have WiFi boosters. The link: https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/wifi/wifi-extender will provide you with additional information about the WiFi extenders. Get Xfinity Pro https://www.xfinity.com/learn/internet-service/xpro and get up to 2 WiFi Extenders included if recommended.

@XfinityDena that doesn't really help anything. I currently own and have a hardwired WAP hooked up. I want to know if I can do anything like reduce the broadcast power of the gateway so that the clients are less "sticky" to it, or if I need to make the broadcast channels vastly different (like having one on 4 and one on 5 is too close).

Hello, @user_p8lncx, unfortunately, you cannot manually reduce the broadcast power of an Xfinity gateway. I have attached an article to walk you through logging into the modem to check the broadcast channels. Admin Tool.
