Intermittent Slow internet outages - SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing

I have Xfinity internet with a Netgear Modem and Netgear Nighthawk Wifi router. I typically get 350-450 mbps, more or less depending on the day.

For the past week I started getting outages where it slows down to 20 mbps, or even down 5 mbps. When it does this, I reset the modem and router and it goes back up to 400, then eventually drops back to below 10. Eventually it will stabilize at 400+ for the night or longer. But eventually it keeps dropping out.

Its NOT the router as I get same problem with ethernet cable from modem to laptop.

XFINITY Help Desk ran some diagnostics and saw no problems with my line (remote)

NETGEAR Help Desk had me log into modem and check event log which revealed:

SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing

So they say its a physical cable issue.

I see no immediate breaks or bends in the cable from wall to modem, but I can't see beyond that. We did have a lot of snow and ice storms in area lately (for the outside cable)

But google results say modem could be failing.

I am sure it will be expensive for Comcast to send a a tech out. A new comcast modem would be free. I am curious if its a bad cable, why am I able to get long periods of 400+ mbps?

Any thoughts on what to do next?

What do the modem's signal status values look like ? Try getting them here; http://192.168.100.1

Please copy all of the text in its entirety of the *Downstream Power Levels*, the *SNR's* (Signal to Noise Ratios), and the *Upstream Power Level* numbers and paste them into your next post.

Thanks for your reply.  I had to make a quick decision as I will be very busy the rest of the week and my wife works from home and urgently needs internet.

The Comcast store is only 5 minutes from me so I ended up going there and upgraded to the 1GB package (from 400) for only $2 more a month and it came with the gateway so seemed like I had nothing to lose by going that route.

So far so good.  I am only getting about 300 mbps initially but it is prime time for internet usage right now.    I will test it through different times of day.

I did follow the coaxial all the way around.  It looks all good except in one spot in the basement where its about to exit to the outside, there is a little scuff/dis-coloration,  I am not sure if thats the problem as I would think a serious break would cause constant outage.   I could replace this portion of cable myself easily enough.

If problem further persists I guess I will have to call out a tech, or come back and ask here.

FYI, here is a picture of the cable portion in basement   (the rest of it throughout house looks fine)
