Internet connection frequently drops

Been having this problem starting about a month ago. I have a tech visit scheduled a week from now, but am posting here for additional feedback.

Observed behavior:

  • Internet will stop working on all devices on my network, a couple of times times per hour.
  • The lights on the modem (my own CM1000) are not flashing in the normal way, signifying some issue with the internet connection
  • A few minutes later the modem lights return to normal and the internet reconnects.

Info from my modem's status pages:

Best I can gather from googling or ChatGPT analysis is:

  • My bonded channels' metrics are within acceptable values.
  • Given that my modem restarts often, ISP issues are more likely. The recurring Timing Synchronization and Ranging errors can disrupt the connection, causing the modem to restart or lose sync. Given how frequently these are occurring in the log, there may be an issue with the connection from the modem to the ISP’s equipment, possibly due to line degradation, signal interference, or problems with the ISP’s equipment.

Two years ago I had an Xfinity tech out and they were very helpful. They updated all my cable terminations, replaced out of spec splitters and eliminated unnecessary splitters, and resolved a problem out by the street. I have double checked that all connections are still snug and the modem is getting enough ventilation.

Seems pretty likely that this is just something outside the house, and a tech visit should get to the bottom of it, right?

The upstream power is on the high side and it may be intermittently fluctuating even higher to out of spec levels. That can cause random disconnects, spontaneous re-booting of the modem, speed, packet loss, latency problems, and the un-bonding of channels.

In an effort to try to obtain better connectivity / more wiggle room, check to see if there are any excess/unneeded coax cable splitters in the line leading to the modem that can be eliminated/re-configured. Any splitters that remain should be high quality and cable rated for 5-1002 MHz, bi-directional, and no gold colored garbage from Home Depot, Target, Wal-Mart, etc. Splitters should be swapped with known to be good / new ones to test.

Also check the coax cable for any damage such as cuts, nicks, abrasions, kinks, sharp bends, etc.

If there aren't any unneeded splitters that can be eliminated and if your coax wiring setup can't be reconfigured so that there is a single two-way splitter connected directly off of the drop from the street / pole with one port feeding the modem and the other port feeding the rest of the house/equipment with additional splits as needed and you've checked all the wiring and fittings for integrity and tightness and refresh them by taking them apart then check for and clean off any corrosion / oxidation on the center wire and put them back together again, then perhaps it's best to book a tech visit to investigate and correct.

Good luck with it !

@user_3uroqk Welcome to our community forum and thank you @EG for jumping in with some awesome advice :). I rely on my internet every day and want to make sure your connection is just as dependable. The large number of T3 timeouts usually indicates an issue outside the home, assuming you've checked all coax connections to make sure they are finger tight and there's no noticeable damage on the line.

Please send a direct message by clicking the chat icon in the upper right corner of the page, click on the pen and paper icon, then enter “Xfinity Support” in the “To” section. Include your name and address so I can find the account and help you schedule an appointment with a technician.

You're welcome ! And FWIW, not necessarily. It could be an internal or an external impairment.
