AFAIK Comcast/Xfinity has never said how they provision devices operating on speed tiers they're not approved for. All I can tell you is that many customers who tried it have reported that they don't get full speed. There's a tendency to think the device will operate at the maximum speed it is capable of, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Great question! The Arris SBG10 has a max download speed of around 400 Mbps, but that’s under ideal conditions. If you’re on a 400 Mbps plan, it can work, but you might not always see the full speeds, especially over WiFi.
If you want, we can help check if your current setup is delivering the best speeds possible — just let us know!

No. Comcast/Xfinity rates it for use with plan speeds "Up to 392 Mbps". See the link to the "All Compatible Devices" PDF near the bottom of https://www.xfinity.com/support/devices (at the moment it points to https://assets.xfinity.com/assets/dotcom/projects/cix-4997_compatible-devices/2025.03.25 Full List of Compatible Devices.pdf, but this changes from time to time).
