Internet out for hours

I'm located in Northern Illinois. At 6:14pm my internet went out and an outage was reported. The estimated restoration time was 9pm. At 6:54 I received an update stating, "

Xfinity service in your area was restored at approximately 11:39 PM Central but your Internet device is offline. To get back up and running, try restarting the device: unplug the power, wait a few seconds, plug it back in, then wait for your device to come back online." 

For 1, how it is possible for an outage to be restored at 11:39pm when the time is not even 7pm yet. 

2, I have done all the troubleshooting steps multiple times now. Xfinity is indicating no outages but my neighbors also don't have internet access. My modem is just blinking orange. Xfinity assistant guided me to schedule a tech appointment but this won't be until Monday. It is currently Wednesday. I'm just hoping that I can get some answers as to what is wrong and what I can do if anything.

Northern CA, outage started at 2 am, no alerts, nothing. It’s now past 8pm on Friday at the beginning of a three-day weekend. I HATE this company but we’re held hostage. No other options at this address. We are in a city of 175,000, so not in a rural area.

Fortunately, we are residential, but there are businesses nearby that depend on reliable internet.
