Moca with XD4 modem (X-2gig)

We recently upgraded to X-2Gig service and received an XD4 modem (which i understand is a DOCSIS 4.0 modem), and while the service works great at first at full speed, it drops to half speed after a few hours.  This speed drop does not happen with our MoCA adapters unplugged, so I suspect some interference with MoCA.

Does anyone have any guidance on getting the XD4 to work well with Moca?  I am a little lost trying to figure out which frequencies are used for X-2Gig, what the XD4 uses, what sort of splitters to buy, and how to configure MoCA for it all to play nicely.  Thanks.

jkruiser Thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately, we don't have supporting documentation on using MoCA with the XD4. The supporting focus is on the high upload, and download speed capabilities.

I am confused by this reply - your technician mentioned nothing when installing the XD4 into my MoCa-enabled network, no information on X-2Gig mentions a sudden incompatibility with MoCa,  the Gateway I am required to use with the XD4 has MoCa settings available, and there are many examples of users asking about MoCa in this forum where Xfinity employees say that MoCa is supported when using Xfinity-provided equipment (for example, here: https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/your-home-network/moca-support-with-xfinity/66d2506c38e9a26c9e752678

I rely on MoCa for extended coverage to my condo.  Are you suggesting that MoCa is not supported with the XD4 or X-2Gig service?

@jkruiser I could be mistaken, but I recall hearing that a MoCA filter will cause issues with the new X-Class DOCSIS 4.0 systems. However, I haven’t seen any word on MoCA devices themselves causing issues. Heck, I haven’t even seen it discussed at all yet.

If it was me, I’d push quite hard to get an XB10, and see whether that resolves the issues. That would be a good start, as the XD4 was really only meant to be a stopgap.

Keep us posted.

@jkruiser Was this issue ever resolved for you? A user here suggested getting the XB10, but I don't see how that is going to solve the issue because MOCA 2.5 runs on the same frequency as DOCSIS 4.0 which is most definitely causing your interference issue. I'm set to have an x-class install on the 14th and currently have a MOCA 2.5 network setup with 5 MOCA adapters, so I have concerns I will run into the same issues you are having.

@user_12zupe   No, not resolved, and I did not pursue an XB10 for that very reason.  Here's my current hacky situation that I have reached peace with until some of this stuff matures, more guidance is available (the first Google result for anything related to this topic is this thread!), or MOCA is updated to support DOCSIS 4.0 frequencies.  It's a little silly but this is what I do:

- Using a -70db MOCA filter at the modem, my internet service works at full speed, with MOCA enabled on my network, for between 6-12 hours, before the speed drops in half.

- I have my XD4 modem plugged into a smart power switch, automated to reboot at 4am every morning, which allows my internet to work at full speed until early/mid-afternoon - at which point it drops to 1gig symmetrical speeds (still an improvement over my prior 1gig down/200mbps up service)

- 1gig is plenty for most stuff, so I generally don't notice the reduced speed even when the drop happens.  But, if I have a large download, I use the smart switch to power cycle the modem to get full speed back for 6-12 hours.

So yeah, not ideal, but I can still benefit from the x-class service and my MOCA network remains intact.  If you make any further progress with your install keep us posted!

@jkruiser the speed drop is a known issue with the XD4 on X-Class 2Gbps symmetrical. That occurs regardless of MoCA usage. Hence my recommendation of the XB10. YMMV.
