Pausing internet access

Can Internet access be paused if my son's PC is connected through Ethernet to our modem? All of a sudden I can't pause access even though the app says it's paused. He says he didn't change anything like the MAC address.

Hello @user_igxvvt thank you for reaching out on our community forum. When it comes to parental controls the PC can still be paused while connected via ethernet cord. The system recognizes the device by the MAC address. Do you know how to check the MAC address on the PC to confirm that it was not changed?

No I do not know how to check if it was changed.  Does a PC ever change its name display?  Originally it was just titled Austins PC, but when I looked yesterday it was called Austins PC-31.

user_igxvvt, No worries. To find the MAC address on a desktop, the fastest method on Windows is opening the Command Prompt (search 'cmd'), typing ipconfig /all.

Great question. The name can change if the device is reassigned or if the network settings are modified, but typically it retains the name unless manually changed in the app or network settings. Please feel free to check out this link here for managing users and devices with the XFINITY app and here for personalizing and controlling your home network using the XFINITY app. Please let us know if this helps.

I am running into the same problem. How do I know if the IP address was changed?

user_ja7aa5 Thanks for reaching out with your concerns! Xfinity residential internt receive dynamic IP addresses. A dynamic IP address is a temporarily assigned number given to your device when you connect to a network. Instead of remaining permanently fixed, it is automatically assigned by a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server from a shared pool of available addresses, and it changes periodically.
