Sudden spike in internet usage

In ~20 years never reached the data cap October and went over somehow. I didn't even know there was a data cap. It looked very dubious. In under two weeks of November I was notified this morning we hit 90% and *a few minutes later*, 100%, which was not possible. There has been no changes on our end. Something is wrong on Comcast's side, something wrong with metering maybe. How can this be resolved? (Below I had to select a topic. I chose "Home Network" even though it has nothing to do with that).

@tsuchiyafranks  Hello and good evening. Thanks for adding to the community. We appreciate it, and are happy you thought of us to assist. We have the best tools, just like the Xfinity Assistant. It is the best resource to manage the account and service online when we are not available. It is my favorite as I can check the service health, and also reboot the wifi for dinner time. That ensures the kids come to eat, and that makes me very happy. Here is a link that I found for you to make it easy to use https://www.xfinity.com/xfinityassistant/. It also helps track the data usage. Here https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/data-usage-exceed-usage are all the details for data usage and tracking it. Xfinity does not impact or view the data you use, that is all personal information for your network. We can only confirm the amount that is used each cycle. Only devices that are connected to your network are able to pull data to use the internet. Follow the guide above to avoid overages, or dispute them with the Comcast Security Team here https://internetsecurity.xfinity.com/help/report-abuse. They can confirm where the data or usage is coming from, so you can make the appropriate adjustments.

"Only devices that are connected to your network are able to pull data to use the internet" is factual, however erroneous metering on Comcast's end is a likely problem in reporting wild and sudden data usage. I can reboot the modem again but we both know that won'd make a difference, or at least it has not so far. What else might account for this? We've had the service for around 20 years and suddenly consuming loads of data for no apparent reason seems sketchy. There have been no changes here. Thanks

@tsuchiyafranks I can see how this can be a concern. It would be for me as well. Have you installed any new devices? Most things require internet these days. Have you transferred or emailed large amounts of data such as photos over the internet? Have you had any visitors that may have done this while connected to your internet? We recommend you change your Wi-Fi password in case people have it that shouldn't.
