Why would a new modem fail to adopt?

I just spent an hour on the phone with a "tech" that wasn't able to adopt my new modem.  She had me do all the usual things but no luck. I've gone back to my old modem because some internet is better than none and now my gateway/router isn't able to reach the internet either.  Is there anything I can do before Tuesday which is the first time they can send someone?
