XB10 5 GHz causes Linux Intel Wi-Fi to fall back to 54 Mbps

My XB10’s 5 GHz radio causes a Lenovo laptop running Zorin OS Pro with an Intel iwlwifi adapter to fall back to a 54 Mbps link rate. The kernel repeatedly logs:

required MCSes not supported, disabling HT

Signal strength is excellent, approximately −42 dBm. The same laptop connects normally to a phone hotspot at 144 Mbps and to the XB10’s 6 GHz BSSID at approximately 1.9–2.1 Gbps. The behavior occurs with both Linux kernels 6.17.0-20 and 6.17.0-35.

Locking NetworkManager to the 6 GHz BSSID resolves the problem. Please escalate this as a possible XB10 5 GHz firmware/MCS-advertisement interoperability issue.

I see the exact same issue with both machines running Linux.  One running Linux Mint, the other Zorin OS.  One is a Lenovo Yoga 2 years old, the other is a Samsung Book3.

Okay gotcha. Connection speeds for Linux devices using Wi-Fi adapters can drop for various reasons that include the distance from the gateway, interference from nearby networks, and the performance of the adapter itself. Seeing as how the connection is only dropping on Linux devices and resolves itself locking into the 6GHZ SSID, there could be a compatibility disconnect between the adapter and the devices themselves.

Some things you'd want to ensure are that the Wi-Fi adapter has the latest drivers, but we're always happy to pass the feedback you provided along as well and appreciate it 👍

Thanks for your reply...     let me clarify that this does not appear to be a distance, interference, or outdated-driver issue.

I have now reproduced the same behavior on two separate laptops, both using Intel AX211 Wi-Fi 6E adapters. Both have excellent signal strength and current Linux iwlwifi firmware. On the XB10’s 5 GHz BSSID, both laptops log:  "required MCSes not supported, disabling HT"

and fall back to a 54 Mbps legacy link rate.

The same laptops connect normally to other Wi-Fi access points, and both connect to the XB10’s 6 GHz BSSID at approximately 1.6–2.4 Gbps.

This strongly suggests an interoperability problem specific to the XB10’s 5 GHz radio or firmware, possibly involving its advertised mandatory MCS capabilities. Please pass this to the XB10 firmware or gateway engineering team rather than treating it as a general Linux driver or signal issue.
